Marangu Theatre Arts Organization (MTAG), being a non-profit organization, was established in 2010. The organization’s main goal was to engage school drop outs and unemployed youth in Community Art development where Theatre Art was the main activity. The income made from Theatre Art Performances was important regarding inspiring the youth to engage in artistic development aiming at addressing different problems and issues that were challenging the local community in Marangu. Among these issues were parents struggling in trying to find reliable nannies or babysitters to take care of their children during the day so they could go to work. In addition many grand parents being main providers for their grandchildren had the need for support in raising the children. Also providers rating orphaned children seriously need support. At this time no professional day care facilities were to be found in Marangu. Calvin Lekule, the founder and artistic leader of MTAG took in 2018 the initiative and founded The Marangu Theatre Arts Day Care Center. The center offers supervised daytime care for preschool children providing both childcare, educational pre-school activities, and playtime during the day while parents work. The core group of children are 30 children between 18 months and 6 1/2 years old. The staff consists of one professional pre-school teacher ,two assistants and a cook. Child care is a broad topic that covers a wide spectrum of activities, and social and cultural conventions. Early child care is an equally important and often overlooked component of child development. Child care providers can be children's first teachers, and therefore play an integral role in systems of early childhood education. Quality care from a young age can have a substantial impact on the future successes of children. The main focus of childcare is on the development of the child, whether that be mental, social, or psychological. The center today supports seven orphaned children. Since the Day Care center opened in July 2018 the facility is still growing, and there is a need for expanding the space, adding a kitchen, and collecting educational material, strong and sturdy toys to play with and developing an outdoor playground. We are sencerely greatful for all donations that can help us along the way. Back in 2016, Calvin shared idea with his brother Gaudence Lekule, in order to start finding how they can develop the idea of opening a daycare center for children in Marangu. The reason of this enterprise arose from the realization that too many children under the age of six happened to be allegedly abused and tortured at home, by their caretakers. Indeed, as the parents need to go to work, they must hire some caretakers to look after their kids while they are away. So in that situation Calvin starts to share the idea with some friends from Norway then they start to find out how to develop the idea. In the years 2017 some of the started to bring some clothes for kids then Calvin and Gaudence start to call some kids and give them, and they start to improve the idea slowly slowly, However, finding trustworthy caretakers is not always granted. Opening a center where kids could spend their day under the supervision of trained and experienced caretakers would therefore be a solution to this problem. Hence, opening a place where children could find peace and develop themselves in a sane environment, some of kids they was suffering even to get one meal per day so the center help them to at least get two meal per day through some Norwegians friends, thanks to the support of dedicated caretakers is the main vision of the MTAO DCC.
Marangu Theatre Arts Organization is located today in what used to be a small house being found on the Kilema road going from Marangu Mtoni and Kinyange Market. At the time when MTAG started renting the house in 2010 it consisted only of two small rooms. A local taylor had his working space on the from porch, and MTAG held theatre art practice in the back yard. Their office and store was inside the house. Today the center has grown while Extra Square meters have been added. By looking at the map one can see that a third room has been added where today English teaching and computer classes are planned to taking place. The very first extra room that was added on to the back of the house is the Children’s play room, and the toilets. Work has still to be done, and a kitchen room is being built along side with the playroom.
